Treasures of the Roman Empire in the Pontine Islands

This is an adventure following in the footsteps of the ancient Romans, exploring the remarkable engineering marvels they constructed to collect rainwater for the inhabitants of the Pontine Islands. The Roman Cisterns of Ponza and Ventotene have now become captivating archaeological sites.

We’ll venture into the subterranean world of Ventotene, where tunnels adorned with graffiti, paintings, and inscriptions await. As we stroll through the charming streets of Ponza, we’ll make our way to the Dragonara Cistern. This remarkable cistern, carved into the tuff, consists of parallel corridors intersecting with grand vaulted chambers.

If you can, pause for a moment and whisper within these narrow passages. The unique acoustics of the cisterns will amplify every sound, creating a truly exceptional atmosphere.

Join us on this journey back in time to discover the ingenious Roman waterworks and the hidden stories etched within these ancient underground chambers.
